Omega-3 (Fish Oil)

Fatty Acids

The long-chain omega-3 fats EPA and DHA (from oily fish or fish oil) are anti-inflammatory and support heart and brain health. Research on cancer prevention is mixed, but omega-3s may help reduce inflammation and support appetite and muscle during treatment.

  • Anti-inflammatory fats that may help counter the chronic inflammation linked to cancer growth.
  • May help preserve weight, muscle and appetite during treatment (studied in cancer-related cachexia).
  • Well established for heart and brain health as part of a balanced diet.

Aim for 2 servings of oily fish weekly (salmon, sardines, mackerel). If using fish oil, a modest dose (~1 g EPA+DHA/day) is typical.

Can thin the blood — important around surgery or if you take blood thinners, so clear it with your oncologist. Large doses may cause stomach upset. Prevention evidence is mixed; not a proven cancer treatment.
